Facebook has launched its own video-chat app, Slingshot after failing to purchase Evan Spiegel’s Snapchat. Spiegel who rejected the offer, is convinced his company has still got more potential and is worth more.  With its young audience it will make it an advertising goldmine when it begins monetizing its services through paid media.

How is it different to Snapchat you ask?

Users are required to “sling” a photo or 15 second video to a friend who will see a pixelated preview until they sling a photo back to the original sender. The users need to ‘unlock’ the message by actually engaging. Slingshot is an active conversation rather than a disjointed or passive one that we see on Snapchat.

Users don’t need a Facebook account to use Slingshot but have the option of connecting with their Facebook account to upload their contact list or can simply upload through their phone contacts list. After taking a photo, users can type a message of up to 140 characters on it, or draw a picture . With Slingshot there is no time limit on the message, you can simply delete once you’ve viewed.

One unique difference is that Slingshot allows users to take a reaction shot to the message. The screen splits in two, with the receiver not having to send back a message to view the reaction shot response.

Will this be as popular? Especially considering the benefit of Snapchat’s anonymity, and the thousands of users who like to send #NSFW style messages. Isn’t it this anonymity which made Snapchat different from most other social networks?

We’ll let the teens decide. Either way knowing Zuckerberg, if he can’t beat them, he’ll buy them (Instagram & WhatsApp) and in the Snapchat case if he can’t buy it,  the Facebook boss will do everything in his power to create something better.
